Ways to Reduce Your Property Tax
1. Homestead Exemption
The homestead exemption allows low-income senior citizens and permanently and totally disabled Ohioans, to reduce their property tax bills, by shielding some of the market value of their homes from taxation. The exemption, which takes the form of a credit on property tax bills, allows qualifying homeowners to exempt up to $25,000 of the market value of their homes from all local property taxes. For example, through the homestead exemption, a home with a market value of $100,000 is billed as if it is worth $75,000. Click on the link below to find out how to apply for this exemption with the Clark County Auditor.
2. Owner-Occupant Tax Reduction
Every property owner that resides in their own home is eligible for a Owner Occupancy reduction on their property tax bill. Homeowners must make an application for this reduction. This is often taken care of at the time of transfer of real estate. To receive the Owner Occupancy homestead tax reduction, you must own and occupy your home as your principal place of residence (domicile) on January 1 of the year in which you file for the reduction. A homeowner and spouse are entitled to this homestead tax reduction on only one home in Ohio. Click on the link below to find out how to apply.
